One of Warren Waters’ early semiconductor patents was inducted into the Smithsonian Chip Collection in 2012.
His United States Patent 3,518,751 “Electrical Connection And/Or Mounting Arrays For Integrated Circuit Chips” was accepted on July 7th, 1970. It was written by Warren P. Waters and Richard J. Belardi, and filed May 25th of 1967, while they were working for Hughes Aircraft in Newport Beach, California. The abstract included by the Smithsonian Chip Collection reads as follows:
Abstract of the Disclosure
An integrated circuit chip having a first array of fixed connection pads and provided with a second array of connection pads conforming to some predetermined desired pattern different from the pattern of the first array, the connection pads of the second array being electrically connected to respective ones of the first array and electrically insulated from other portions of the circuit chip.
